Moyola Angling Association And so the 2012 Angling season has closed for the Moyola Angling Association. Rods Reels and Wellies have been put away for the long Winter hibernation.
But for the hatchery committee the work is only beginning.
The day after the season ended the Rods were replaced with an electro fisher in order to go along the River to find Dollaghan and Salmon for the Hatchery.
Conditions were far from ideal but this determined bunch did manage a few Dollaghan which will be ready for stripping anytime.
Not a lot of Club Members see what goes on behind the scenes when the season finishes. A lot of hard work and countless hours go into protecting the survival of these iconic species of Salmonoids.
The Fish are captured in the River and are transported unharmed via a specially designed trailer to the Hatchery high in the hills above Draperstown. Here the fish will have their eggs stripped and fertilised before being returned to the River.
The eggs are then checked each night to ensure the maximum amount hatch into young fry. These fry are then planted out into the headwaters of Moyola and its tributaries to grow for a couple of years before starting their journey to adulthood.
It takes dedicated people to run the Hatchery, but they will always accept help and are very willing to pass on the knowledge which has taken them years to develop.
If you feel you could help out with securing the future of the Moyola’s unique Salmon and Dollaghan please let us know. The experience of giving nature a helping hand is both rewarding and educational.
