John.
i have had quite a lot of reports of otters this year. i was entertained on a couple of nights this year below Castledawson by a young family of otters who were very inquisitive. Joey had told me that he caught two Dollaghan one night just as the same otters swam around the pool. The same thing happened to me, i caught a Dollaghan just seconds after seeing and hearing the young otter.
i have seen them around Ballynahone also.
Definately a great indicator of the healthy status of the river.
i just wish it was as easy to catch a salmon as it was to spot otters.

I went fishing on Sunday at the Forgetown Bridge. It was a disaster from an angling point of view but what was even more saddening was the large otter which had been killed on the road. Maybe we should be collating otter sightings so that we can show how remarkable and valuable an eco-system the Moyola is.

The Competition secretarys report for the Heron Bros Cup fished for on the 25/9/10.The Moyola was in great shape after all the rain but the fishing was not so great.
First time winner this season with a nice bag of Trout bait fishing was Brain Bigmore, in 2nd place was Anthony O Hagan with a fine 1lb/6oz Dollaghan bait fishing, and in 3rd place was Peter O Neill fly fishing.
A big well done to Lucinda Evans for being the best junior angler weighing in a fine Trout of 1lb 3oz.
There was 22 seniors and 8 juniors out our best so far this season. With one competition to go Tommy Mc grath has 103 points and cannot be caught now but 2nd place is not desided yet with Philip Maguire on 90 points ,Joey O Neill on 89 points, and Stanley Aspinall on 88 points so all to fish for lads. Our last competition is The Gerard Mclarnon Memorial Cup on the 16 th of October.
There is a total ban on the killing of Salmon in october and this applies to this competition also.
Any one who has trophys from last season can they bring them along to the next competition or our next club meeting thankyou.
Tight lines.

Another good nights work done at ponds.
Still a lot to be done so anyone who likes to fish at ponds dont be afraid to call in anytime and do a bit of strimming, old grass to be gathered in piles, general tidy up.
As you are all aware ponds are now closed for fishing untill 11th oct.
we have signs erected to let anyone who doesnt read guestbook see, no fishing.

Hi Philip just weighing up your options for the league title, you would need to win the last two competitions and i just have turn up for us to draw level, maybe i will handicap myself by fishing BAIT. See you on Saturday for the Heron Bros Cup at 10 30. Well done to Brian Bigmore who won the best shore angler, and Joey ONeill for best overall angler at the Lough Fea open last Saturday.

There has been pollution in the river yesterday coming in from the seven arche bridge, it was a tractor leaking diesel, all the pools from the seven arche bridge to the beds were effected by this. There are numerous occasions that pollution has happened and the offenders caught. but the pollution is still on going, especially up at mc kennas bridge outside straw,.i think futher actions need to be taken and prosecutions need to be made, especially at this time of the year to make fishing better

The information only came to my attention a few days ago. I drew it to your attention so that there would be an opportunity to deny it was genuine or to inform other members that this incident allegedly took place. It may also be the case that since the matter has now been aired those who might have a "flexi-time " approach to the season will think again. I thought that I was doing the correct thing-sorry if I wasn't.

Just to let you know that there is a rumour that there has been an instance where angling took place at Christmas on a famous part of the upper river. The participants were said to be drunk. Hopefully this will give you an opportunity to stop this is nonsense.
